Keep Your Head Down, keep your left arm (for righties) straight and bend your knees. These are three helpful tips that golfers often share with other golfers to help improve their game.
They mean well but it needs to be more specific. If your head is down too far there is no space for your shoulder to go under your chin. Your head is already down looking at the ball. No need to drop your chin to your neck. As far as keeping the left arm straight goes, yes, you can try to keep it perfectly straight but it’s not a law.
Your left arm doesn’t have to be locked straight to hit quality golf shots. Google Calvin Peete, who played the PGA tour in the 1980’s with a left arm he physically couldn’t straighten. If you make a proper turn away from the ball with your chest, the left arm will be easier to extend and create width in your backswing. For those who are flexible enough to keep their left arm perfectly straight that’s great.
You have an advantage. Lastly, the Knee Bend. If you just bend from the waist and your body is still straight up you need to work on your posture. The knees do flex but you need to be in a position like a shortstop ready to field a ground ball. Returning a serve in tennis or playing defense in basketball are other examples of sports where your posture is in a get ready position.
The better your set up is the better chance you have of hitting good shots.
