Tallest menorah shines bright in Liberty

A large crowd consisting of hundreds of people from all walks of life came out to the Plaza Mall parking lot outside ShopRite in Liberty on Saturday, December 4, for the annual celebration and lighting of the Giant Menorah.

Attendees enjoyed live entertainment, dancing, gifts for children as well as latkes and other refreshments.

Lead and organized by Chabad of Liberty NY, Rabbi Yossi Hurwitz said that the Big Menorah Lighting in ShopRite Mall of Liberty has become the biggest traditional Jewish Festival of the entire Catskills mountains for the last eight years.

Each year there’s a special attraction at the Festival, explained Rabbi Hurwitz.

“This year we had a fire truck where the Ladder went up very high and from there we threw down special parachutes of little Menoras and Dreidels plus Chanuka Gelt- coins of chocolates,” said Rabbi Hurwitz. “This was the life of the festival for the children.”

The crowd Included a number of elected officials, including New York State Senator Mike Martucci, Liberty Town Supervisor Frank DeMayo, Village of Liberty Mayor Ron Staback, Village of Liberty Police Chief Steven D’Agata, Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff, Town of Liberty Councilmembers Brian McPhillips, Vincent McPhillips, County Clerk Russell Reeves and many more.

Representatives from the Liberty Joint Fire District attended and provided their apparatus to celebrate the occasion.
