Montis prevail in rainy 10th year anniversary of the passing of Jessica Fingers

MONTICELLO – For the vast majority of people competing in, or attending the Jessica Fingers Invitational at Monticello, it was just another early spring track meet. While for those with memories of recent years of the event, it was yet another occasion where Mother Nature saw fit to send inclement weather that seems to be a part of this meet year after year.

In 2019 it was snow coming down sideways. Last year it was early morning frost. This year, it was rain as it has often been in bygone years. But for those of us who lovingly remember Jessica Fingers, the 2009 Monticello graduate, track star and transcendent spirit, her untimely passing ten years ago at the age of 21 calls up a sense of grief that has not abated.

The brief spoken tribute and plaque at the entrance to the track were absent from this year’s event, highlighting what she meant to the Monticello community, her family, friends and those who revered her amazing accomplishments in her all-too-brief tenure on this earth.

The unwelcoming weather caused Liberty, Fallsburg and the Sullivan West girls to forego the meet, leaving Monticello, Port Jervis, Burke, Livingston Manor/Roscoe, Eldred and the Sullivan West boys to carry on.

By day’s end, Monticello’s boys and girls teams had prevailed over the diminished field. It should be noted that years ago, this meet featured a bevy of schools from locales near and far but with other meets occurring on the same weekend, the participating contingent has been more limited.
