CRAIGSMOOR - The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference Conservation Dogs Program is making their rounds to educate people about the benefits of using canines in conservation with demonstrations in the Shawangunk Ridge State Forest this past weekend highlighting the invasive spotted lanternfly and with upcoming visits to local students in the works.

The spotted lanternfly is a planthopper native to China that made its way to Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2014 and has been moving into the area since. The Trail Conference has been using dogs in the region to determine just how widespread an infestation is by having them sniff out the destructive species. The dogs are also trained to find various invasive plants, the disease oak wilt, as well as the at-risk wood turtle.

The Conservation Dogs Program would love to hear from you if you're interested in hosting educational demonstrations or want to know how you can help. To learn more, visit www.nynjtc.org/content/conservation-dog-program.
