EVENTS

  • The Lost Ladybug Project

Saturday, July 31, from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Did you know the 9-Spotted Ladybug is New York’s official state insect and was once very plentiful? Over the past 20 years native ladybugs that were once very common have become extremely rare. Join naturalist Pam Golben to learn all about Ladybugs and how to participate in Cornell University’s Lost Ladybug Project. We will begin with a short slideshow, then head to the Pollinator Garden where you can help release live 9-Spotted Ladybug larvae! Sponsored by the Bashakill Area Association so this event is FREE! Pre-registration is required, 20 maximum participants. To register call 644-5014 or email Jackie.Broder@mamakating.org. Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Rd, Wurtsboro.

  • Critter Connection at MEEC

Sunday, August 1, from 1 - 3 p.m.

Young animals have much to learn, stop in Sunday, August 1, anytime between 1 - 3 pm. With the help of the community, we will be training three friendly critters. Joining us will be a 3 month old white faced cockatiel, a young dumbo rex rat and a hooded rat (both fancy rats). Feel free to bring sticks, dowel rods, wicker baskets, wooden ladders, etc. for “Luna” the Cockatiel to play and learn with; and empty cardboard cracker, cereal, tissue, frozen food or other types of boxes and tubes to create mazes for the rats! We want to teach our animal ambassadors that humans are safe, fun and interesting to be around!! Donations encouraged. Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Rd, Wurtsboro.

  • Science with Frank: Is Water Important?

Friday, August 6, from 12:30 - 2 p.m.

We know water is essential to life, but does it have other important uses? Find out in our second Science with Frank program. Be ready for some lively discussion and fun hands on activities. Please call to register. Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Rd, Wurtsboro.

  • Common Snakes of the Hudson Valley

Sunday, August 8, from 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Snakes, fascinating and sometimes misunderstood, play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Join naturalist Pam Golben to learn about the natural history of snakes found in the Hudson Valley as well as how to identify them. As a bonus, you’ll get to meet a live snake! This program is sponsored by the Bashakill Area Association so it’s FREE! Registration is required. Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Rd, Wurtsboro.

  • Amazing Moths!

Sunday, August 15, from 8:30 - 10 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE! Celebrate National Moth Week with us! Moths are the “cousins” of Butterflies and just as interesting and beautiful. Join naturalist extraordinaire Pam Golben for this evening program to learn fun facts about moths. Then head outside to view what is attracted to our lure light. We will search for moth caterpillars too. Please register. Mamakating Environmental Education Center, 762 South Rd, Wurtsboro.
