Blue Devils 0-2 after two non-league games

SPACKENKILL –– The Blue Devils, a combination of Roscoe, Livingston Manor and Downsville took the field for the second time this season for a non-league matchup against Spackenkill. The Blue Devils lost the championship rematch against Pawling last week, and had a chance to right the ship this week against a Spartans team that lost to Sullivan West last week.

The two teams were in a stalemate for most of the first half, keeping the score knotted at 0 until Spackenkill found the end-zone with 2:13 left in the 2nd quarter. The two teams entered the break with a score of 8-0, with neither team being able to muster up much offense.

The Spartans started the second half with the ball, scoring quickly with a 55-yard passing touchdown but failing on the 2-point conversion attempt to increase their lead to 14.

The Blue devils turned the ball over on downs on their next drive, coming up just inches short of the first down. Following the turnover, Alaniz Ruiz intercepted a pass and set the Blue Devils back up with the ball. They failed to convert another fourth down and gave the ball back to the Spartans, setting up for another long passing touchdown to make the score 20-0 before the third quarter came to a close.

Down 20-0 in the fourth quarter, the Roscoe defense made a stand, stalling the Spartans deep in their own territory. When Spackenkill attempted a punt, the Blue Devils defense crashed in and blocked it, setting them up inside the red zone with a first down. A holding penalty negated and Ruiz touchdown and backed the offense up, but the Blue Devils would not be denied, and Ruiz scored with 5:38 to go.

An incomplete pass on the 2-point conversion kept the score knotted at 20-6, which is where it would stay when the game clock expired. Now 2-0, Roscoe will be back at home next Saturday, hosting Ellenville in their first league match of the season.
