Utilities suspend late payment charge for Winter

Posted

SULLIVAN – New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) have announced the suspension of late payment charges from December 1 to April 15 in response to current market conditions that have raised energy supply prices for all customers.

While NYSEG and RG&E procure energy on the open markets, which have experienced a rise in prices due to a variety of reasons, including supply chain obstructions, increased fuel prices, and repercussions from events happening world-wide.

“Our electricity and natural gas delivery rates are expected to remain steady through the winter, but supply prices are expected to climb,” said Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “To alleviate the financial hardship this will cause during the winter heating season, we have elected to waive late payment charges on customer bills for this period.”

NYSEG and RG&E are both subsidiaries of AVANGRID, Inc.

Sullivan County residents who utilize NYSEG and RG&E heating and energy services are eligible to receive assistance in creating payment plans, which are available online by visiting their website at www.nyseg.com.

HEAP can help

In addition to the suspension of late payment charges from NYSEG and RG&E, the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) federal grant is available to those in Sullivan County who are eligible to help cover payment for energy bills, repairs and weatherization. Customers are encouraged to apply for the HEAP grant.

HEAP may be able to help you if you heat your home with electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, propane, wood or wooden pellets, kerosene, and corn.

If eligible, those who apply may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year. Applicants could also be eligible for emergency HEAP benefits if they are in danger of running out of fuel or having utility services shut off.

For further information regarding the programs available, please see the overview page on the State New York’s website, www.ny.gov/programs/heap, or by calling the Sullivan County Division of Health and Human Services at (845) 292-0100 anytime from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
