Villa Roma prepares for 41st Democrat Tourney

CALLICOON – With just a week remaining until the kickoff of the 41st Annual Sullivan County Democrat Two-Man Better Ball Golf Tournament, the Villa Roma is putting the final touches on the course.

A golf course project that was initiated in November, as the course closed for the season and the winter weather invaded Sullivan County, has recently been finished, just in time for the three-day tournament next weekend.

New stone tee-markers that each weigh approximately 2000 pounds and feature local businesses, have been installed near the tees of each hole, informing the golfers of the hole number, par and distance to center of the green.

The Golf Course Superintendent at the Villa Roma, Will O’Brien, spearheaded the beautification project that began in late 2021.

The tee markers show the distance from four different tee locations, with the distance being to the center of the green, not necessarily to the pin, depending on its placement.

Tournament Sponsor and Publisher of the Sullivan County Democrat, Fred Stabbert III said, “They came out beautifully, and we’re so delighted to have our name attached to such a great golf course. I have had Hole No. 1 since the tee markers went up nearly twenty years ago and when Will asked me to sponsor a new marker, I agreed to take the same hole.”

The fieldstone markers came from Gustin Stone Supply in Lakewood, PA, and were engraved and affixed with the local business sponsors by Martin Caufield Memorial Works in Honesdale, PA.

Tourney Ready

The Sullivan County Democrat Golf Tourney looks to have a very talented field, with 68 teams – 136 golfers – ready to tee it up on Friday in a double shotgun start 8am and 12:30pm.

Friday’s round – known as the qualifier – will position the teams in 8 separate flights and then match place competition will continue both Saturday and Sunday until winners are crowned in each flight.

“We also will be inducting three more golfers into the Sullivan County Democrat Golf Tourney Hall of Fame and have a surprise for our golfers, which they will notice the first time they step up to putt,” Stabbert said. “We are looking forward to a great tourney and thank Will and Villa Roma Golf Professional Matt Kleiner for all they have done to get us ready.”
