Volunteers build tomorrow

Among other things, April is designated as National Volunteers Month. It’s a time when we celebrate and encourage the power of people who dedicate their time to build stronger, more vibrant communities.

Although volunteer efforts happen all year long, it’s important to take some time this month to consider just how great an impact our volunteers can make. The selfless actions of countless individuals form the backbone of so many nonprofit and charitable organizations looking to build a better tomorrow.

Sullivan County has a robust Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Representing the largest volunteer network for people aged 55 and over, RSVP claims nearly 500,000 volunteers across the country who are working to address issues in their communities.

RSVP offers a full range of volunteer opportunities with many local and national organizations where volunteers can choose how and where they want to serve. Those interested can call (845) 807-0251 to learn how they can use their lifetime of experience and skills to give something back.

But you don’t need to be at least 55-years-old to get involved with many volunteer opportunities.

Literacy volunteers is another nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free services to people in Sullivan County who are operating at low levels of literacy or need to increase proficiency in English as a second language. Visit literacysullivan.org to learn more.

The Sullivan County Historical Society (SCHS) works to preserve our local history for the benefit of future generations through the preservation of historical records and documents, the acquisition of artifacts which illustrate different periods in county history and the curation of temporary and permanent exhibits. Visit scnyhistory.org to learn more.

For more than three decades, the United Way of Sullivan County has been supporting programs that help address the fundamental needs of Sullivan County residents. The United Way helps to ensure that all people have access to quality education and the opportunity to lead healthy and financially secure lives. Through various programs such as Project Cares, Wardrobes for Preparedness or their SnackPack program, United Way volunteers help create real and lasting change in the lives of the people they benefit. Visit unitedwaysullivancounty.org/get-involved to learn more.

No mention of volunteers would be complete without special recognition to our volunteer firefighters and EMS crews who always stand ready to answer the call. Visit the Join Sullivan County Fire Facebook page or email them at joinsullivanfire@gmail.com. Check out your local town or hamlet’s volunteer ambulance corps to see if you’d be a good fit.

Volunteerism not only benefits our communities but it can also enrich the lives of those who discover a way to help others.
