‘We owe them all'

On Saturday, under sunny skies and non-November like gorgeous weather, people lined Route 52 in Woodbourne -- at a safe distance -- for one purpose: to honor our veterans.

Each year this spectacular parade ending at the Woodbourne Firehouse serves as a local precursor to Veterans' Day.

Our veterans have always been an example of selflessness putting our country's freedoms before their own lives. But what is even more awe inspiring - considering today's divserse view of America - is their unity. No matter their backgrounds, political views or beliefs, they band together, unified as Americans. If this election cycle has taught us anything, it's that United States is made up of Americans who are proud to call this country home. Like our veterans and active-duty soldiers, we now must all work together for the common good.

So what can we do to honor them on this important holiday?

While there will undoubtedly be less ceremonies this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there doesn't have to be one to thank these brave men and women who have served our country to protect our freedoms.

Please try and take a moment tomorrow to think of them.

We may not necessarily be able to give them as grand a spectacle of recognition like we try to do each November 11, there's nothing stopping us from picking up the phone and calling a veteran we know, thanking them for their service, seeing if they are doing alright and asking if they need anything.

Also, if you have the means, consider donating to various charities that help our veterans. It's the least we can do.

Each year our staff puts together a Veterans' Day salute and covers events across the county honoring our veterans.

While that hasn't changed, we decided to add something new to the tribute this year. You will see dozens of photographs and short bios of local veterans. You'll notice many familiar faces. We are proud of each one of you and thank you not just for your service, but for taking the time to share your story with us.

And as for every veteran in this great country, a popular and unattributed phrase has emerged in recent years that sums up our thoughts nicely.

“We don't know them all, but we owe them all.”
