What can your library offer you?

In this age where we have a computer in our pockets every day, some people question what we need libraries for. All of the information available is online. No one reads anymore, so what importance are the best sellers? While libraries are a beacon of novels and information libraries are so much more than that.

Do you know anyone who is looking to work on his or her high school equivalency after dropping out of grade school? Libraries can help this person. We have regular GED (HSE or TASC) classes, as well as study guides to help you with the test.

Are you looking for a place that can help educate and socialize young children? Libraries are a major resource for young children. Not only do we have picture books for them, we offer story time as well. Children will have an opportunity to interact with others their age, and there may also be a simple craft to help children to interact with the world around them. Livingston Manor Free Library has recently started a Saturday Story Time at 10:30 a.m., so if the Tuesday Story Time didn't fit your schedule, children aged 4-6 are welcome to the weekend session.

Have you checked out your library's DVD section? While streaming is popular and likely the way of the future, libraries still have DVDs which can be borrowed. All you need is to bring in your library card! If you don't have internet or subscribe to a streaming service, you can watch the latest movies for free. And now that we are into award season, be sure to see what titles are available.

Speaking of the internet, do you know that libraries are a hub for internet access? Most libraries have computer stations available for patrons to use, if you need to print up a resume, concert tickets or even just catch up with email. And in addition to printing, we can copy and scan documents for you. Plus many offer wifi and you can access the internet over your phone.

Did you also know that all the libraries in the county work together and you are not limited to the collection of your home or closest library? If there is a specific title you are looking for but cannot find in your local library, we will try our best to find a way to get it to you! If you are a card carrying library patron, you have access to items from over 40 Ramapo Catskill Library System libraries.

If you were looking to use the library more in the new year, these are just some of the many resources we have, in addition to a room full of books. Make sure to see what your local library does offer as each community and its needs are different. However, you are always welcome in neighboring libraries and we are always happy to see new faces using the library system as a whole.
