William Joseph “Billy” Steinberg passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 15, 2022 in the Town of Thompson doing what he loved to do – helping others in need. He was only 37 years old.

The son of James E. Steinberg Sr. and Laura R. Clark Steinberg, he was born February 16, 1984 in Port Jervis.

Billy was a lifelong member and Assistant Chief for the Forestburgh Fire Dept.; a member of Mahogany Ridge Hunting Camp, the NRA, FASNY, and the Eagle Scout Association, Class of 2000. He also worked for Sullivan Paving for over 16 years, and Black Bear Fuel Oil as a delivery man.

He is survived by his parents: Jim & Laurie Steinberg of Forestburgh; a brother: James E. Steinberg Jr. & his wife Stephanie of Monticello; three stepsons: Tyler Wheat (Lexie), Kyle Wheat and Brandon Wheat; nieces & nephews: James E. Steinberg III, Nicole, Baileigh, Jackson and Logan Steinberg; aunts and uncles: Annie (Phil) Kavecki, Wanda (Sam) Berger, Debbie (Don) Swanerbury, and Ralph Steinberg Jr. “Chip” (Debs); several cousins; and many, many friends.

His funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello with Fr. Bob Porpora officiating. Firematic services will be held at the church just prior to the mass. Burial will follow at the Hartwood Cemetery on McCormick Road in Forestburgh. Since there is no public visitation, family and friends are invited to gather at the Monticello Fire Dept., 23 Richardson Avenue in Monticello to celebrate his life, following the burial on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a memorial fund soon to be established in Billy’s memory. These donations can be made payable and sent to the Forestburgh Fire Dept., 2539 State Route 42, Forestburgh, NY 12777.

Arrangements are under the direction of the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home of Monticello. For additional information or to send an online condolence, please visit www.kennyfuneralhome.com.
