Wolf Lake Neighbors Support Mamakating Library

The Mamakating Library is pleased to announce a $4,000 grant received from our neighbors at Wolf Lake that will enable us to offer several new programs this summer. The grant will support three programmatic series developed to address the expressed interests and needs in the Mamakating community. These include a children’s book club and reading enrichment classes to help prevent the “summer slide” in literary skills; a beginning level Spanish/English storytime; and a basic technology series for adults. This generous grant helps the library achieve its literacy goals in the areas of reading, new language learning, and technology. In particular, the children’s programs have been created to address the damage COVID-19 has done to the traditional educational process. Together with the adult technology series, these programs are designed to create diverse opportunities for children and adults.

“Libraries are much more than stacks of books,” said Library Director, Peggy Johansen. “We strive to be a friendly, stimulating community center where people connect with books, technology and other people.”

Patti Andersen, president of the Library Board of Trustees, addressed the collaborative process of program development between the library and our Wolf Lake neighbors stating, “After recognizing that we had common interests in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing the concerns of our local community, discussions were held with both parties contributing to a plan.”

Funding for these programs was made possible through the efforts of The Wolf Lake Neighbors Foundation, Inc., homeowners at nearby Wolf Lake, engaged in philanthropic activities in the towns of Mamakating and Thompson.
