Women’s Softball League playoffs heating up

MONGAUP VALLEY –– Family and softball go together like meatballs and spaghetti as grandma Leah Exner and granddaughter Ryleigh Herbert watched Leah's daughter, Ashley Exner Herbert (Ryleigh’s mom) in the second game of the Sullivan County Women’s Softball league A division playoffs between Charlie’s Angels and the Bat Girls Club last week at Collins Field.

Charlie’s Angels defeated the Bat Girls 13-7 to sweep the series 2-0, winning the first game of this semifinal championships by the 15-run rule.

The win propels the Angels into the Championship series against undefeated L & B Tack with the first game played last night at Collins Field and the second game scheduled tonight in the second game at Collins.

L&B in their semifinal games defeated D&D Contracting.

Charlie’s Angels have lost several games to L & B in regular season play this year, but Angels pitcher and team captain Joanne Walls said they were looking forward to the games with L & B and that, “whoever has their hitting attack on that night will win.”

The Angels were the last team to defeat L&B in the 2019 season and that win resulted in the league championship ... something everyone knows is on L&B's attack list.

In the Angels-Bat Girls second game, the Bat Girls took an early 7-0 lead before the bats came alive as the Angels pushed across six runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth inning.

These 10 runs and several costly errors by the Bat Girls pushed Charlie's Angels into the championship game with L&B.

Producing a well-rounded game for the Angels was shortstop Katy Decker with timely hitting and excellent defensive play.

Walls noted in a post game interview, “We got great defensive play when we needed it and the bats came alive with players on base.”

Bat Girls Club manager, Amanda Goddard, in game comments said, “In my mind our bats were not up to the standard we are used to,” and “errors happen to everyone but crossing home plate wins game.”

“There’s no doubt that our bats struggled after the second inning," Amanda noted.

“Every day is different, there’s no telling what team will win in this league on any given day. All teams have good players, and it’s all about what those players do the day of the game that decides the outcome ... we all have off days,” and “our off days just happened to be in playoffs,” the Bat Girls manager said.

In her comments about the team this season, Amanda said, “I thought we had a strong team this season ... we always have a good core but finding girls in Sullivan County that want to commit to a few late nights a week is tough,” and “I’m overall proud of our team, and I wouldn’t want to play with anyone else, and a lot of the girls on the team feel the same way.”

“At the end of the day I always enjoy being around these girls and they make it fun to be a bit tired the next day ... we look forward to next year," Goddard said.
