Yaun to compete in Golf Series

Posted

The Yaun family from Sullivan County and the entire golfing community are excited with the double good news that Liberty University golfer Jonathan Yaun is among the 25 golfers named to the PING All-Region East team, which has been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America, and that Jonathan will be competing this summer in the Elite Amateur Golf Series.

This is the second year in a row that Yaun has been named to the All-Region East team.

Yaun this year ranked third on the Liberty University team with a 72.11 season stroke average, which included a pair of top-five finishes. He played 15-of-36 rounds at par or better (41.7 percent) and posted seven sub-70 rounds of golf.

The native of Minneola, Florida led the team in last round scoring average (70.82), which individually ranks No. 92 in the country.

Yaun also helped Liberty University rank No. 27 in the country in par-5 scoring by leading the team with a 4.64 scoring average on the par-5 holes.

He helped Liberty University advance to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship for the third year in a row.

Jonathan's participation in the Elite Amateur Series has as its centerpiece the Elite Amateur Cup.

Competitors accumulate "World Amateur Golf Rankings" points through their finishes in each major summer individual tournament. The player with the most points overall will be declared the Cup "winner," giving him and the top 5 finishers exemptions to the U.S. Open, the U.S. Amateur and select Korn Ferry and Canadian Tour events.

The seven tournaments that make up the Elite Amateur Golf Series include the Southern Amateur, Sunnehanna Amateur, Northeast Amateur, North and South Amateur, Trans-Miss Amateur, Pacific Coast Amateur and Western Amateur.

These tournaments have a long history of hosting the best players at the best venues producing the best competition.

Like PGA Tour University Global Rankings, the Elite Amateur Golf Series provides another path for top amateurs to gain exemptions into professional events based on season-long performance.

Jonathan has been accepted into all of the Series events and has accepted invitations to play in five of them with the cost to each tournament to the family being about $2500 to $3500.

Jonathan is part of the Liberty based Yaun family where the game of golf go together like ham and cheese. He is the son of championship golfers Radford and Meredith Yaun who make their home in Mineola, Florida.

The Sullivan County golf scene remembers Radford (Rad) Yaun while living in Liberty when he won the New York State Amateur Championship in 1976 at the Grossinger Golf Course and the New York State Junior Amateur Championship in 1972 in Jamestown, N.Y.

Rad graduated from Liberty Central in 1974, played golf at Jacksonville University and was team captain in his sophomore, junior and senior years and won six collegiate tournaments.

Meredith is originally from Philadelphia, PA, and it was because of the game of golf that she met Rad who was at a driving range getting help with his tee shot which he said was costing him four shots a round with left to right misses.

An accomplished athlete Meredith is a two-time east coast surf champion, played golf at the University of Miami and FIU and won the prestigious Lady Seminole Golf Championship at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

In 1981 Meredith turned professional and became a Professional Golf Association (PGA) United Kingdom in 1983. She is the 1986 Scottish Open Champion.

Many Sullivan County golfers remember Rad Yaun and the championships he won. Let’s all wish the best to Jonathan Yaun in the Elite Amateur Golf Series.

Fitzpatrick Earns $3.15 Million in Open Win

The U.S. Open offered a $17.5 million purse and Matthew Fitzpatrick, U.S. Open Champion earned $3.15 million of it.

But he wasn't the only person who left The Country Club at Brookline, MA with a seven-figure check.

Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris tied for second place last Sunday afternoon and both earned over $1.5 million.

Fitzpatrick is the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Justin Rose in 2013. He made a remarkable shot from the bunker to the green on the 18th hole to salvage the hole and the U.S. Open title.

Golf Tip By Robert Menges

One of the really great things about the game of golf is that we don't play golf on exactly the same type of golf course with exactly the same weather conditions or the same ground conditions week to week.

We have to change our approach very regularly.

And this question really relates to how can we change our putting when we are putting on fast greens.

So fast greens might be that they've just been cut, it's a nice bright hot summer day or even just a lot of times when we leave ourselves downhill putts.

What adjustments do we, as golfers, need to make to haul in the most putts on these greens?

One of the major adjustments relates in the speed that we hit the putter. If there’s a fast green, it’s best to make a shorter stroke but remember to accelerate through.
