‘Hearts Unloched' Novel set in Loch Sheldrake, now an award winner

By Autumn Schanil - staff writer

Hearts Unloched by Claire Gem is an award-winning, romantic suspense novel released in early April.
LOCH SHELDRAKE — Hailing from Middletown and now residing in Massachusetts, Frances Brown who writes under the pen name Claire Gem, will be at the Sullivan County Historical Society Museum in Hurleyville presenting a book talk and signing of her novel “Hearts Unloched.”
So if you're into romance novels with a hint of paranormal suspense and ghostly twists, don't miss Brown's talk and book signing this Sunday, June 26th, from 2-4 p.m. at the Museum in Hurleyville.
“Hearts Unloched” is a romantic love story with a paranormal twist that takes place in our very own Loch Sheldrake. It was chosen as the runner-up in the romance category at the 2016 New York Book Festival's competition in midtown Manhattan.

“My husband, Clark, was born and raised north of Liberty, so we have a lot of friends and family in the area,” said Brown. “When visiting the area for the wedding of Clark's son, Clark told me about the urban legend of Loch Sheldrake.”
Legend has it that the lake had once been the dumping grounds for New York City's mob activities, and it's not hard to imagine what they were getting rid of.
“It got me really interested in the lake and I started asking [in my head] ‘what if this, what if that,' like many writers do. By the time I got home I practically had the entire book written in my head.”
In just a few short months, Brown had completed the book, hired an editor, and had her sister design the cover.
Now an award-winning novel and released in paperback on April 14, “Hearts Unloched” is being read far and wide.
