Catskill International Film Festival holds soft opening

By Autumn Schanil - reporter/photographer

Self-taught artist Malinda Ware, who is also an employee of Cornell Cooperative Extension in Liberty, had her acrylic paintings on display for the soft opening.
The Catskill International Film Festival (CIFF) is a non-profit event promoting screenplays, television pilots and independent films from filmmakers around the world, and this year, CIFF will be housed by the Callicoon Theater and the Western Hotel beginning Friday, September 7 and ending Sunday, September 9.
So Saturday evening, SUNY Sullivan hosted a soft opening for the Catskill International Film Festival from 6-9 p.m. with live music, food, an art exhibit, short films, and of course, networking.
Attracting people from all around the region, SUNY Sullivan's event space was full of people connecting, laughing, taking photos, and sharing in their appreciation for art and creativity.
Self-taught artist Malinda Ware, who works for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Liberty, was ecstatic to have her work on display at the event.

“All of my paintings just kind of happen,” said Ware. “It's spiritual for me. Sometimes I come home at night and I just need to paint. Whatever comes of that comes, and it's mostly been women, and it's interesting to see how everything develops over time.”
Artists just like Ware will be coming together at CIFF in September, as there will be events besides feature films and performances. There will also be a filmmakers workshop, an acting workshop, a poetry slam and more.
