CALLICOON — The Janice Center's dance program reached new heights at its June 4 recital when more than 100 dancers took to the Sullivan West High School auditorium stage.
The record number of participants forced the Jeffersonville-based arts center to switch the venue from its longtime location at SUNY Sullivan's Seelig Theater to the spacious Sullivan West auditorium. An audience of 400 family, friends and guests watched the two-hour performance which featured The Janice Center's ballet and hip hop dancers.
All totaled, the dancers performed 17 routines originally choreographed by Janice Center dance director and co-owner Tanya Cohen. Some of the numbers included a rendition of Pure Imagination in which all 31 ballet students were on the stage at the same time.
The hip hop portion of the recital featured an impressive opener showcasing all 62 dancers on the stage, in the aisles and in the pit area.
Perhaps, the highlight of the recital was a routine performed by 10 dads and/or other significant males of hip hop students to a Will Smith mix. The dads had practiced for several weeks prior to the show and drew a large applause for some of their moves - and just as many laughs!
In addition to the 100 dancers, more than 20 parent and student volunteers were part of the show, assisting backstage, in the dressing areas and with lighting / sound.
Ballet and hip hop are offered for ages 4 and up at The Janice Center in two separate sessions: a fall session which runs from September through mid-December culminating with a recital at the Villa Roma and a winter/spring session starting in February and ending the first week of June.
