‘THINC-ing' outside the box at TEAMS Challenge

By Carol Montana - reporter/photographer

Roscoe's Abigail Creamer explains her design for a contemporary alarm clock. Behind her is Roscoe science teacher Taso Pantilieris, a.k.a. Mr. P.
Saturday, February 1 was a day of challenges for students from three Sullivan County schools. The students and their advisors from Sullivan West, Fallsburg and Roscoe gathered at the THINC Lab in Hurleyville for the TEAMS Challenge (Technology, Engineering, Art, Math and Science), a mid-year event created and administered by Sullivan County BOCES in cooperation with The Center for Discovery (TCFD).
Guided by TEAMS Challenge Coordinator Denise Sullivan and led by Director of Innovation for TCFD Jason Kean, the students were presented with real-life challenges such as designing an alarm clock and a “better way to wake up.”
They moved on to experience virtual reality with Design and Fabrication Coordinator Mark McNamara, and were video recorded with green-screen technology by Digital Media Lab Project Coordinator Julie Palmer. But the big draw of the day was flying a quadcopter in the large THINC lab lobby.
TEAMS Challenge is open to all middle and high school students in the eight districts of Sullivan County.
Focusing on designing, problem solving, collaboration and presentation, the students receive video-chat coaching from the THINC staff.
The program will hold another challenge on June 6, with teams presenting their solutions to supporters and local experts who will judge the competition.
