PA State Historical & Museum Blue Marker to honor Lyricist Richard Smith's “Winter Wonderland”

HONESDALE, PA - With immense honor, Greater Honesdale Partnership is pleased to announce the acceptance of their application for a PA State Historical and Museum Commission Blue Marker commemorating lyricist Richard “Dick” Smith's world renown Christmas carol, Winter Wonderland.
He will be memorialized in his hometown of Honesdale with this easily recognizable Blue Marker. This marker will be placed in front of his family home, 922 Church Street, Honesdale, PA. The Campbell Law Offices currently occupy the residence.
While Mr. Smith recuperated from tuberculosis in a Scranton sanitarium, he sat dreaming about his time as a boy playing in Honesdale Central Park.
The lyrics brought him back to a time of childhood freedom and fun playing in the snow.
Greater Honesdale Partnership holds an annual “Winter Wonderland Parade” the evening after Thanksgiving every year welcoming Santa to Central Park where he counts down the lighting of the massive evergreen tree and Winter Wonderland Star upon Irving Cliff.
The Historical Blue Marker will be dedicated at 2 p.m. on November 27, 2021. Please plan on attending this event which will follow current Covid state guidelines.
We want to thank Intern Lillian Slate for her research that provided the factual evidence proving Richard Smith's homestead is indeed in Honesdale, PA. Most importantly, thank you to Representative Jonathan Fritz's family for their private donation to pay for the marker. Without these pivotal contributions, this celebratory event would not be possible.
