MONTICELLO — The Sullivan County Million Man March Community Action Group (MMM), along with their Committee of Sisters sponsored a celebration of African-American History Month on Saturday, February 27 at the Ted Stroebele Center Neighborhood Facility in Monticello.
The day of recognition included music, food, speakers and entertainers.
Brother Melvin York of the Mahanaim Pentecostal Church of Monticello, offered the opening prayer, and Jesse York president / chairman of the MMM shared the Maya Angelou poem “The Black Family Pledge” as an example of life guidelines:
Because we have forgotten our ancestors,
our children no longer give us honor.
Because we have lost the path our ancestors cleared
kneeling in perilous undergrowth,
our children cannot find their way. ..
Therefore we pledge to bind ourselves to one another, to embrace our
lowliest, to keep company with our loneliest, to educate our illiterate,
to feed our starving, to clothe our ragged, to do all good things ...
