Woodstock site soon to be on state, national historic registers

National Historic Register nomination report for Woodstock site
BETHEL — The site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair in Bethel has long had an historical marker at the famed corner of Hurd and West Shore roads, but soon it will have the historic designation to go with it.
On Thursday, NYS Board for Historic Preservation members unanimously agreed to nominate the property for National Historic Register listing, which also will put it on the state historic register.
“The governor nominated us when he was here for the Catskills Challenge, which was a delightful surprise,” Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun explained.
Bethel Woods owns the site and the acreage falling under the coming designation, which Fedun expects to be finalized at the federal level in January or February.
She thanked Governor Andrew Cuomo and state officials who put in the time and effort to recognize a watershed moment and place in American history - now approaching its 50th anniversary.
“It is a very arduous process,” Fedun affirmed.
“It's quite a long and complex report.”
It's also a deeply detailed and illuminating report, which can be found with this story at
Fedun sees two major benefits from being listed on both registers.
“From a tourism standpoint, it's a great thing to add to the marketing mix,” she said. “It also bodes very well when you go for state and federal grant funding."
