Callicoon's got history

Gov. Cuomo announces 19 recommended historic place

By Autumn Schanil - staff writer

CALLICOON — On Wednesday, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that 19 properties, resources and districts have been recommended by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation as additions to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
In Sullivan County, our very own district of Callicoon has been nominated.
With history dating back to the 1830s, the small hamlet of Callicoon has been a popular location along the Delaware River as a local service center, river landing and railroad stop.
Once recommendations are approved by the state historic preservation officer, the properties will be listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
Cuomo said, “These landmarks are a part of our rich and storied history and helped define what it means to be a New Yorker.

“By placing these landmarks on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, we are preserving their legacies and ensuring that they will be enjoyed for generations to come.”
