The Arc Sullivan-Orange Counties celebrates 70th Anniversary
Oct 23, 2019
MONTICELLO - The Arc Sullivan-Orange Counties is celebrating their 70th Anniversary this year. Earlier in the year, SullivanArc merged with The Arc of Orange County to become The Arc Sullivan-Orange Counties.
SullivanArc, originally called AHRC (Association for the Help of Retarded Children), was founded as a small school in 1949 by Ruth Bennett, a local parent who had a child with a developmental disability. She and a few other parents needed a place for their children to learn since at the time, public schools did not accept children with mental retardation (as it was referred to at the time). It was one of the first four Arcs in the country, which is now in 39 states including 48 chapters in New York State.
The Arc of Sullivan-Orange Counties, which is a not-for-profit organization, has now grown to support over 2,000 people of all ages with disabilities, while employing over 1,200 staff.
They provide homes, schools, day programs, clinical services, family respite services, recreation and so much more.
On November 2 they will be celebrating with a Gala Wine Pairing Dinner at the Sullivan Events Center in Rock Hill. The dinner will honor Susan K. Miller, a long time Board Member, with the Ruth Bennett Humanitarian Award. There will also be a silent auction featuring a wide variety of items including collectable wines.
To acquire tickets to attend, call Joan Glase at 845-796-1350 extension 1050, or go online at www.arcsullivanorange.org.
