County plans to re-negotiate contract with Visitors Association

MONTICELLO — A resolution that was on the agenda for the legislature's Executive Committee meeting to terminate the county's contract with the Sullivan Catskills Visitors Association (SCVA) appeared on Monday.

But by Wednesday that resolution changed to reflect that it was a re-negotiation of the contract.

According to Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Rob Doherty, he brought the resolution forth because he would like a renegotiated contract to allow the legislature to have greater oversight of the SCVA.

It came before the Executive Committee yesterday at the Government Center and was passed 6-1. Legislator Luis Alvarez abstained, citing his employment at the Villa Roma, which is a member of the SCVA. Legislator Nadia Rajsz was the only dissenting vote.

The legislature then went into executive session to discuss the contract.

Chairman of the SCVA board, Sims Foster, said he was “surprised” to see the resolution to terminate the contract on Monday. However, he said he looks forward to having discussions about re-negotiating the contract.

The county entered into a contract with the SCVA in 2018, designating it as the official tourism promotion agency for the county.

As part of New York State law, 85 percent of hotel and motel room tax collected in the county is allocated to the SCVA, with the remaining 15 percent going to the county.

This was a breaking news story as of press time yesterday; look for a follow-up in an upcoming edition of the Democrat.
