Solar power coming to Fallsburg

Posted

MAMAKATING — Delaware River Solar is building a 20-acre solar power farm that is currently under construction on Rosemond Road to bring solar energy and discounts to Fallsburg NYSEG customers.

According to Rich Winter, head of the project, most of the construction is expected to be completed by the end of October and will be “interconnected to the grid in 2020.”

The farm is expected to supply energy to approximately 400 homes while providing a ten percent credit on their electric bill.

The solar energy works by sending all the energy produced by the farm to the NYSEG grid. NYSEG will then credit Delaware River Solar for the value of that energy. Any resident who has subscribed to the solar farm will be given the credit “to offset their utility bill, and they are charged only 90 percent of the value of the credit/ hence saving 10 percent.

So, if someone is assigned $100 worth of credits, they are only billed $90 for them,” according to Winter.

Winter noted that the Rosemond Road project is the tenth project in Sullivan County, and the eleventh is currently under construction in Bethel. Delaware River Solar has other solar farms in Delaware, Liberty, Tusten, and Thompson.

Town of Fallsburg residents will have the opportunity to subscribe to the energy produced by the solar farm and the ten percent savings on their electric first. If not enough residents subscribe, then anyone who uses NYSEG to power their house may subscribe.

Town Supervisor Steven Vegliante later told the Democrat that he has already subscribed to the solar farm.

“I hope we can get to a point where all of our residents sign up and benefit… and knowing it comes from renewable energy makes it extra sweet,” he said.
