County legislator's son found dead on Kiamesha Lake

KIAMESHA LAKE — Friends and family are mourning the loss of Christopher Alan Sorensen, 27, son of District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen, after he was found dead near his home on Kiamesha Lake Monday morning, December 30.

Sorensen was the eldest of three children and a 2011 graduate of Monticello High School. Prior to his death, he was working for the Monticello Central School District in the Empire After School Program at the Emma Chase Elementary School.

The circumstances of his death remain unclear, but authorities say his body was recovered from Kiamesha Lake near the vacant Leisure Time Spring Water plant on Monday, December 30.

According to Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, investigators are waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The Sorensen family released a statement Monday evening regarding Christopher's “tragic accident,” recalling their son and brother as “a young man with a kind heart and a belief that with hard work and kindness, he and others could make a difference in the world.”

In their statement, Alan Sorensen said he would continue to run his Planning business and serve as county legislator for his district, a position he was just re-elected to in November.

Sorensen's mother, Jane Sorensen, will continue her work for the Monticello School District as Program Manager for its EPIC program and his sisters will return to college following their winter break.

“This is the time of year when family and friends gather to express their love and appreciation for one another and our family, strong and very much together, will rely on the strength of each other and our dear loved ones and friends.”

Further condolences were expressed in a joint statement from Sorensen's colleagues at the county legislature, signed by both incoming and outgoing lawmakers.

“The entire County of Sullivan offers our thoughts, our prayers and our open arms to the Sorensen family, who would certainly never hesitate to do the same in return. May their beloved memories of Chris, and the lasting support of all of us who love and cherish this endlessly giving family, sustain them throughout this difficult time,” the county statement read.

The county announced earlier this week that the oath-taking ceremony for returning and newly elected legislators that was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 2, would be postponed along with their annual reorganizational meeting.

Details on the legislature's meeting schedule are expected to be released next week.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 5 from noon until 4 p.m. at Ramsay's Funeral Home at 55 St. John Street in Monticello.
