Liberty prepares for vaccine distribution

LIBERTY — During the regular board meeting in Liberty on Tuesday, Supervisor Frank DeMayo reported that the Medicine Shoppe, located in the Colonial Square Mall on Route 52, will be receiving COVID-19 vaccinations.

While the Medicine Shoppe does not have the space to administer the vaccine, they were talking with the town council about securing a place for a few days to give shots to seniors and the most vulnerable in the community.

A call to Medicine Shoppe revealed the staff does not have any information regarding the vaccine, but referred everyone to liberty.medicineshoppe.com.

Supervisor DeMayo proposed a motion to authorize them to use the Senior Center at 119 N Main St to administer the COVID-19 vaccine for senior citizens.

“We need to get the people the vaccine who need the vaccine, and the Senior Center is perfect for that,” said Councilman Vince McPhillips.

The Town Board did not yet announce specific dates and times for when the COVID-19 vaccinations would be made available by appointment, but Supervisor DeMayo said they would announce those as soon as they could.

The demand for COVID vaccines in Sullivan County continues to be high.

It was announced on Wednesday that Sullivan County Public Health Services received COVID-19 Vaccines for registrants over 65 years of age beginning Friday, January 22 and with clinics scheduled for January 25, 26 and 27.

“We have received 800 doses of the vaccine,” confirmed Public Health Director Nancy McGraw, “600 of which are required by the State to be given to people 65+. The other 200 are reserved for essential workers (which includes police, firefighters, teachers, etc).”

Within two hours of that announcement, however, all available appointments had been booked.

The county said they would send out new notices as the vaccine becomes more widely and regularly available.

“County health departments are playing a key role in the fight against the coronavirus in New York,” stated McGraw. “We applaud recent efforts by the Cuomo administration to rely more heavily on county health departments amid a slow rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

SCHOOLS UPDATE

Both Liberty Elementary School and Liberty Middle School have been on remote instruction due to positive COVID cases. In-person instruction at the elementary school is expected to resume January 27, while the middle school is expected to resume in-person instruction on January 25.

Tri-Valley Elementary School is also on remote instruction due to a staff member recently testing positive. They will remain on remote instruction through February 1. The Secondary School will continue to operate as scheduled and Frost Valley students will be transported.

And finally, Robert J. Kaiser (RJK) Middle School in Monticello has been on remote instruction through today, January 22.
