Former Narrowsburg resident arrested in connection to Capitol attack

NEW YORK — Edward Jacob Lang (known as Jake Lang) was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents at his home in Newburgh on Saturday for his role in the attack on the Capitol building on January 6.

According to an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent LaNard Taylor, Lang was charged with four counts: assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees; civil disorder; restricted building or grounds; and violent entry or disorderly conduct.

This comes after the FBI is investigating the events at the Capitol building on January 6 when a mob stormed inside.

Through posts on social media made by Lang, the FBI was able to identify him.

“Decisions have consequences. Edward Lang is in custody for the ones he made during the assault on our Capitol,” FBI Assistant Director in Charge William Sweeney wrote in a statement on January 16.

Lang had a digital preliminary hearing in White Plains on Tuesday.

One social media post by Lang depicted a group of people attempting to gain entry into the Capitol and had the words “This is me” with an icon pointed at the front of the crowd.

According to the federal affidavit, the FBI interviewed a witness who identified Lang as a person involved in the riot at the Capitol. The unnamed witness met Lang when they were children and has maintained a social media connection with him.

Lang is known to have grown up in the Narrowsburg area and his father is Ned Lang, a former councilman for the Town of Tusten. He could not be reached for comment by the Democrat.

Jake Lang's defense attorney, Steven Metcalf, did not return a request for comment. Ned Lang released a statement to the Narrowsburg-based River Reporter saying, “Jake has had a substance abuse problem. As a result, he has had numerous issues with law enforcement over the past 11 years and it has only gotten worse, as is evidenced by his most recent arrest and actions at our nation's Capitol! We are praying for my son that he conquers his addictions and finds a new path foward in his life!”

Now deleted posts on social media include a video showing Lang with a bloodied face at the scene of the event. He captioned it, “I was the leader of Liberty today. Arrest me. You are on the wrong side of history.”

In another post, a video shows Lang in a crowd saying, “I ain't done yet.” He was wearing a black leather jacket with a blue floral shirt underneath.

Another video showed “an individual consistent with Lang with a green gas mask on,” as the affidavit reads, directly in front of law enforcement.

“The images show Lang violently engaging with law enforcement officers as they attempted to keep rioters out of the Capitol,” Special Agent Taylor wrote.

On January 14, Lang posted a video and said, “Been really amazing to have this impact on the community, going to keep on fighting for you guys, we got some big things planned. We are not going to let them take our Constitutional Liberties. Our God-given rights are safe within the hearts of the patriots.”

Federal agents have already arrested and charged more than 100 individuals who were involved in the January 6 break in of the Capitol and are continuing their search to identify individuals who actively instigated violence on January 6 in Washington, D.C.
