New art show creates perfect harmony

BARRYVILLE — Ceramics artist Nonna Hall wanted a place where she could not only show her own work but also those of her friends.

Finding the perfect property, she opened her studio and gallery and called it Nonnetta and Friends Creative, an encapsulation of the creative community that lives and works in the area.

She enjoys working with other artists and finding opportunities to display their work.

Opening on January 30 is the newest show with woodworker Alexandra Climent and Kristin Texeira titled “Wood Winds.”

The name is a reference to the pieces that Climent makes that are music related, and the works by Texeira where she paints colors that come to mind from listening to songs.

“We were talking a lot about winter up here and the theme of music, and how it can be used to carry you through the colder darker months,” Climent said.

She will be displaying a sheet music stand and guitar stand that have already been sold but can be made on commission, as well as wooden worry eggs and collection boxes.

The material she uses is sourced from fallen trees in the jungles of South and Central America. The journey to get the material is a big part of her work.

“The designs show the beauty of the wood and where it came from,” Climent says.

The exotic woods are very dense and Climent uses power tools such as chain saws to carve and sculpt the wood to create functional art.

Texeira creates abstract paintings inspired by her interactions with people and place. Her use of color is channeled from her sensitivity to memory.

Associating color with sound is a form of synesthesia, a condition in which your senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) intersect. For example, someone might assign a color to numbers or letters or are able to taste a certain color. It's a condition often found in artists and writers.

“I'm using that same concept with music, where I'm painting the colors that come to mind when I'm listening to songs,” Texeira said.

Using flyers and social media, she asked people to send her their favorite song, and from that she is creating 100 paintings that will be displayed.

The show will open with a reception from 3 to 7 p.m. and people must wear masks and it will be limited to three people inside at a time.

The two artists and Hall are excited to be able to offer this event during the pandemic where many people feel isolated.

“This project was another way to reach out to people and gather community, because as far as my work goes it really feeds off of human interaction,” Texeira said. “I'm grateful for the community up here.”

Hall expressed her admiration for both artists, and this is the first time they will be collaborating.

“They complement each other so beautifully,” she said. “Both of their work is very powerful.”

Wood Winds opens with a reception on Saturday, January 30 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Nonneta and Friends Creative, 16 Old Brook Road, Barryville, NY. The show closes on February 28. For more information visit www.nonnetaandfriends.com.
