Callicoon town board addresses Bethlehem Road

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Town of Callicoon and Fremont have both received complaints about Bethlehem Road because of increased traffic, which has caused concerns surrounding the conditions of the road.

According to Callicoon Highway Superintendent Kris Scullion, Callicoon and Fremont are trying to form a plan to accommodate the increased number of travelers on the road by working on the unpaved sections. Scullion also noted that he has issued at least three driveway permits for residents on Bethlehem Road this year.

“We're trying to put together a plan because people [are] driving through there with cars and trying to get through where they shouldn't be driving,” Scullion said. “There's more people around now more than ever so we're getting complaints now, and it's not going to get any better as the winter goes on.”

On July 30, Callicoon's Town, Planning and Zoning Boards held a meeting to discuss a renewable energy law that the town is considering adding to their zoning. According to Town of Callicoon Supervisor Tom Bose, another meeting is being planned to discuss the amendment further, but a date has not been finalized.

“We try to get a joint workshop between the three boards - planning, zoning board of appeals and the town board - to try and do at least one a year just to converse about the things that are going on in the town,” said Bose. “This happens to be where we are considering some updates to our zoning.”

The Town of Callicoon will also be receiving an update to their streetlights. The conversion to LED street lights in the Town of Callicoon is projected to start in the town's three lighting districts (Youngsville, North Branch, and Callicoon Center) by next week.

On Friday Sept. 25 and Saturday Sept. 26, the Town of Callicoon will have their clean up day. The clean up days will also be held with the town's shred day, and Jeff Bank will be providing half of the cost of the shred day, according to Bose.
