Rajsz launches public condemnation against Doherty

MONTICELLO — At last week's full board meeting of the county legislature, Legislator Nadia Rajsz called out Chairman Rob Doherty for using social media and the county's website to put out statements without the full agreement from the rest of the legislature, using his title as chairman to represent the legislators.

"You need to inform us of these letters and posts so that we agree as to what you're saying," she said. "You're representing all of us."

She said she would introduce a resolution "to issue a formal censure" of Doherty.

The resolution states, in part, “the Chair is expected to uphold the integrity of that office on behalf of the residents of Sullivan County and the County Legislature,” and that when Doherty issued a statement on the ethics charge against Legislator Luis Alvarez it was a “personal statement” that was “defamatory and unsubstantiated.”

In addition, she said he used words that are "inappropriate" and has publicly mistreated women, including herself (Rajsz is the only woman on the board).

"You've yelled, you've bullied, you've harassed," she said. "It needs to stop now."

In a statement to the Democrat Doherty said, “I vehemently deny acting or commenting inappropriately toward any employee or public during our legislative meetings or through any of my other interactions with county employees or the public.”

He said that he and Rajsz have disagreed at times, but have voted together more times than not.

“As Chairman of the Legislature, I occupy the most visible and arguably most influential elected position in Sullivan County, which I take very seriously,” Doherty said. “When I speak as the Chair, I make sure I am representing the thoughts and feelings of a majority of my fellow legislators.”

In U.S. government, a censure is a formal and public condemnation of an individual. Rajsz said she would bring up the resolution in the Health and Family Services Committee, which meets on March 11.
