Buzz about the homeless

There has been significant “buzz” about the increasing costs of a four-year college education and the emphasis of two-year degrees or trade/vocational school enrollments.

Therefore, I find it hard to comprehend the empty dormitory space at SUNY Sullivan and the possible plan to make this dorm space available to homeless individuals and/or families in a transitional housing utilization. The question becomes why isn’t this dorm space utilized by college students? Is there a problem with the enrollment? Is there a problem or concern with the school’s reputation? Where are the County Legislators with this issue?

Having previously taught at the college, I have always observed it to be an effective learning environment and a good place for potential students.

As for the homeless issue, here too where are the legislators? The plan and direction presented is weak and lacking in voices and resources that can effectively assist in addressing this issue.

For example, a turnkey facility exists on “Prison Road,” the former Sullivan Correctional Annex which has been sitting idle for years but is in good condition.

A task force of a mixed array of individuals representing the various facets of the problem needs to be put in place.

Despite what the article stated about the numbers of homeless in the County, these numbers are manageable and can be reduced significantly with the right approach and resources.
