Mental Health is a priority

These days, life can be difficult. They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and while strength often comes at the cost of experience, it doesn’t mean it was necessary. And when bad things happen without warning it can leave anyone with brutal emotions and sad feelings to deal with.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it is the perfect time to reflect not only on what makes us hurt, but what makes the hurt dissolve and how better to deal with what we’re going through in a healthy and positive manner.

No one is immune from hardships and it can help to check in on your family and friends to see how they are doing.

Don’t be afraid of the conversation that may follow – it just might change a life; it just might save a life.

There is also help available to those who are struggling, like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Sullivan County, who offer mental health services and are hosting a candlelight vigil for mental health on May 20 at the Sullivan County Courthouse in Monticello at 7 p.m. What a great reminder that we are all not alone in our individual push for peace.

Mental health may not be visible to the naked eye, but it remains just as vital as our physical health, and in a world that often moves fast, it can get overlooked – especially if the necessary conversations go unsaid. When those words are spoken, be sure to listen and be attentive. Our roles as family members, friends and even strangers are made possible by our ears and our hearts.

If you or someone you love may be struggling, please seek assistance. The fight for good mental health is worth it.
