Jeffersonville woman charged

JEFFERSONVILLE — An underage drinking party at the Jeffersonville home of Vanessa Sergio resulted in four teenagers testing above the legal limit for blood alcohol content on Friday night.

Sullivan County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the residence on Swiss Hill Road North after receiving a report, at approximately 11 p.m., that underage drinking was taking place.

When deputies arrived, they found about a dozen youths consuming alcohol, four of which tested above .08 BAC. The deputies on scene called the teens parents to have them taken home.

“Keeping our children safe and out of harms way is a top priority for both my office and the District Attorney,” stated Sheriff Michael Schiff. “Aside from the stories we hear about alcohol poisoning and fatal DWI crashes, studies show that underage drinking has a lifetime of consequences for our children.”

Sergio, aged 41, was charged with one count of unlawful alcohol consumption by a minor under the County's Social Host Law, which was a law proposed by District Attorney James Farrell and adopted by the county legislature in 2012.

Schiff said the law, “is an important tool in the fight against underage drinking.”

The charge against Sergio, which is a violation in the first offense, carries a $500 fine and community service. Sergio was issued an appearance ticket for April 10, in the Town of Delaware Court at 7:30 p.m.
