A historical course reborn:

Sullivan County Golf Club celebrates 100 years

LIBERTY – This week the Sullivan County Golf Club marked its 100th year with a two-day celebration.

“It’s incredibly exciting to celebrate a hundred years in Sullivan County and to have all the partners here. Foster Supply was a huge part of this,” shared owner and partner Tom Coyne.

The course has come a long way since the Democrat last visited in May.

“Last year we did a lot of construction, and the spring was really wet, so it took us a while to start to heal and get the grass to grow. Now we start to see what this course is really going to be,” Coyne said.

“A fun, unique nine-hole experience,” shared Coyne.

Coyne’s two partners – retired NFL center Jason Kelce and actor Bill Murray, were also in attendance.

Kelce said, “The course looks fantastic. It’s in incredible shape and the clubhouse is spectacular.”

Murray added, “This is going to be fun and that’s what it’s all about.”

Colton Craig, principal architect of the course, shared, “He [Tom] asked me to redesign the course. We added the amenity of a driving range and I think we improved the overall journey of the routing and how you experience the land.”

The celebration attracted visitors from New Jersey, Philadelphia and Massachusetts. Guests were treated to an evening of live music, delicious food and golf, of course!

John and Jackson Morytko were in town for a father/son golf trip in nearby Ulster County when they decided to stop by SCGC for this event. “He’s a golfer like me. We come up to visit because it’s so family friendly.”

Sullivan County Golf Club is one of the oldest golf courses in the Catskills with a history dating back to the early 1900s. Bill Nigl has been a resident of Hurleyville since the seventies.

Recently, Nigl stopped into the course for lunch and to walk the green.

“Over the years, I’ve always been fascinated by this course. It’s beautiful.”

Otto’s Restaurant is now a clubhouse destination at SCGC which pays homage to Otto Hillig, who is considered to be one of the greatest photographers in Catskills history.

Guests can view some of  his work as they enjoy a meal inside the dining area. Communications Manager at the Sullivan County Visitors Association Skylar Strauss, shared her thoughts on the festivities, “I think this is an amazing event and I love the decorations. I think it’s great that they stuck with the theme in honor of Otto.”

The Sullivan County Visitors Association supported Foster Supply to help promote the course and restaurant to the public.

Coyne’s hope is that the Sullivan County community will come visit and enjoy this historical space that has found new life!
