A Taste of Italy in Narrowsburg

Nonna’s Pantry, a new light-filled shop at 25 Main Street in Narrowsburg, is now open to shoppers looking to stock up on gourmet Italian pantry items, tableware, and other kitchen accessories and provisions. At the grand opening on March 14, visitors sampled items from the shop including Italian olive oil, chocolates, and jams in flavors such as cherry and apricot.

The shop is owned by Rosetta Canto of North Branch, who was born in Salerno in Southern Italy, and came to the U.S. when she was two years old. “My family is from a beautiful hilltop town called Trentinara located in the Cilento region where we still have lots of family,” says Canto.

Canto, who has family in the importation business, says she always dreamed of opening a small boutique type store with all the Italian foods she grew up with. “My mom always made everything from scratch,” says Canto. “We had a huge garden and always had fresh vegetables and tons of jarred tomatoes from the garden.”

Nonna’s Pantry is Canto’s first store, and it is filled with all the things she loves. “I’m most excited about all the imported pastas from Italy as well as the flavored olive oils and jams,” she says. Canto plans to add a refrigerator to the shop to offer cold drinks to customers. Some of her favorite non-food items in the shop include Italian themed salad bowls, hand painted espresso cups, and olive wood ladles and spatulas.

“All the things I grew up with,” she says.

Nonna’s Kitchen is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00am -5:00pm.
