LIVINGSTON MANOR – The Livingston Manor-Roscoe Library would like to invite book lovers near and far to Book Repair 101. The Livingston Manor Branch will host professional book conservator Cara Schlesinger on Thursday, September 4 at 6pm for a presentation and demonstration.

Cara will cover general book conservation, answering questions such as “What can be preserved?” and more. She will also discuss the best practices for caring for hardcover books, both new and old. After her presentation, Cara will demonstrate simple repairs that can be done at home such as fixing a weak binding, reattaching pages that have fallen out, and more. She will also demonstrate how to make starch paste, a staple in book binding and paper conservation, using just corn starch, water, and heat.

Cara Schlesinger is the proprietor of Faenwyl Bindery and is a bench-trained bookbinder and book conservator. She’s spent years as a caretaker of rare, valuable, and beloved books and ephemera, with the key goal of preserving their integrity and longevity as treasured objects. Cara has provided conservation services and/or custom boxes to places such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library, Columbia University Libraries, Peabody Essex Museum, and more.

Registration is required. To sign up, please contact the library at 845-439-5440 or visit LivingstonManorLibrary.org/ProgramSignUp. The Livingston Manor Branch is located at 92 Main St. Livingston Manor.
