Calling all Quilters!

LIBERTY – On Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 am the doors open at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Liberty, NY, when the Calico Geese Quilters will hold its Block-of-the-Month get-together. The workshop begins at 9:30 am.

If you are a quilter, or would like to become one, this meeting is for you! What does Block-of-the-Month mean? A block is a repeated section of a quilt. It can be a square, a triangle, a hexagon, or any other shape that will fit together with other similar shapes to make a quilt.

The size of the blocks can be whatever the quilter would like. The colors are left to the quilter’s imagination or whatever fabric scraps, preferably cotton, are available. Hopefully, the quilter coordinates the colors so that the end result is pleasing to the eye.

Every month on the last Saturday, the Calico Geese Quilters Guild gathers at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building in Liberty, New York, to cooperatively make a quilt. Nancy Michel, the workshop organiser, coordinates fabric so that attendees only have to sew the precut kit together to make the block of a given size and shape. Experienced quilters may come and learn a new technique from Ms Michel. She then takes the blocks home and sews them into a quilt top. The results are stunning!

Attendees are requested to bring a portable sewing machine, neutral thread, and a good quarter-inch guide. Ms Michel provides all materials and instructions, so even beginners can participate in the Saturday seminars. All are invited to join in the fun.

The finished quilts are donated to local charities such as The Federation for the Homeless, United Way, and New Hope Manor. The Calico Geese Quilters also sponsors a yearly raffle as a fundraiser. Tickets for the raffle are available by calling the Cornell Cooperative Extension at (845) 292-6180.
