County Historian Named to Aphnys Board of Directors

BABYLON – Sullivan County Historian John Conway has been named to the Board of Directors of the Association of Public Historians of New York State.

Mr. Conway is an internationally recognized historian and historiographer who has served as the official Sullivan County Historian since 1993. He is a founding member and President of the non-profit history education group, The Delaware Company, which among other undertakings operates Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History in Narrowsburg and provides historical programming at the Minisink Battleground Park in Barryville. He is the co-chair, along with his wife Debra, of the official Sullivan County committee to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence.

Mr. Conway has written Retrospect, a weekly newspaper column on local history since 1987, and has published dozens of magazine articles, and nine books, with a tenth in progress with a 2025 release date. He has discussed Catskills history on radio and television shows and podcasts in several countries, and averages more than 50 speaking engagements a year, talking about Sullivan County’s storied history to students, service organizations, and public gatherings throughout the country.

Among other honors, he was the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Service Award from the Upper Delaware Council, and was inducted into the Monticello High School Hall of Distinction in October of 2024.

He lives in Barryville with his wife and their Newfoundland dog, Quill.

The Association of Public Historians of New York State is a 501(c)3 non-profit professional organization that represents the 1,600+ government-appointed historians in the state.
