BEACH LAKE — Upper Delaware River Region, PA and NY – The Delaware Highlands Conservancy announces community programs and workshops hosted in August 2025 at the Van Scott Nature Reserve, located at 571 Perkins Pond Rd, Beach Lake, PA. Friday, August 1 – 1pm-2pm – Boundin’ Furbearers
Ever wonder about the difference between a red fox and a grey fox? Did you know that grey fox are the only member of the canine family that can climb trees? Do opossums really play dead? What is a fisher? Join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy to learn about many of the various furry animals that live in the woods around us! Space is limited and prior registration is requested. Event fee is $5 for Conservancy members or $10 for non-members; kids under 12 are free. This program is intended for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult to attend.
Saturday, August 2 – 7:30pm-9:30pm – Bat-tacular Program with Optional Bat Walk
Join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy for an engaging, hour-long talk about the world’s only flying mammal—the bat! Discover the different types of bats found in this area, learn about their fascinating behaviors, and find out what to do if you have bats in your home. We’ll also discuss the impact of White-nose syndrome and much more. After the presentation, join us for an optional walk through the Reserve (8:30-9:30pm), where we’ll use a bat frequency reader to detect the bats around us! (Please note, seeing bats is not guaranteed.) If you are attending the walk, please be prepared to walk on sloped terrain, and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that are comfortable for the weather. Flashlights are recommended. Fee is $5 for Conservancy members and $10 for non-members; kids under 12 are free. Advance registration is requested. Lecture is targeted to adults, but the walk is appropriate for all ages.
Thursday, August 21 – 5:30pm-6:30pm – Conservation Conversations *FREE Virtual Event*
Join the Conservancy’s Land Protection Coordinators Trey Talley and Kaylan Hubbard for a free Zoom gathering to learn about Delaware Highlands Conservancy and how we can help you protect your land. What is a conservation easement and what property characteristics do we look for? What are the steps and costs associated with placing a conservation easement on your property? Are there any financial benefits for the landowner? Following a brief presentation, you will be invited to join the conversation and get your questions answered. Zoom meeting details will be provided after registration.
Tuesday, August 26 – 12pm-1pm – Mystery Zoom *Free*
It’s a mystery! Join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy on the last Tuesday of every month through October for a fun and exciting Mystery Zoom. Engage with us each week on social media to try and guess the theme based on clues and questions we share. Each Zoom will cover a different topic, so stay tuned until the end of the month to see if your guess was right! And if the topic sparks your interest, stick around and learn something new with us! Zoom meeting details will be emailed to you after registration.
Saturday, August 30 – 10am-12pm – Discovery Walk
Join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy for an open-ended adventure as we hike through the beautiful Van Scott Nature Reserve. This relaxed program is all about exploring the outdoors and discovering the wonders of the ecosystem together. From the birds soaring overhead to the trees towering around us, we’ll chat about anything and everything nature has to offer. Bring your curiosity and let’s see what we can find! Please be prepared to walk on sloped terrain, and wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that are comfortable for the weather. Fee is $5 for Conservancy members and $10 for non-members; kids 12 and under $2. Advance registration is requested. Appropriate for all ages.
