Delaware Highlands Conservancy announces Spring Bog Walk this Saturday

Posted

DINGMAN’S FERRY, PA – On Saturday, April 18 from 10 am – Noon, join the Delaware Highlands Conservancy for a glimpse into an ancient landscape on a guided walk into Long Swamp at Camp Speers YMCA in Pike County, PA.

Formed more than 10,000 years ago as glaciers retreated, Long Swamp is a rare peatland ecosystem that supports a variety of Ericaceous (acid-loving) shrubs, including leatherleaf, early azalea, and huckleberry.

April is an ideal time to identify these unique shrubs, as the tree canopy has not yet filled in and many shrubs are already in flower. This seasonal window offers a unique opportunity to observe and learn to identify these plants in a location forever protected with a conservation easement through the efforts of Camp Speers YMCA, Delaware Highlands Conservancy, the Pike County Scenic Rural Character Preservation Program, and public support.

This event is free, but attendees are asked to register in advance for the program. For program details and to register, please visit www.DelawareHighlands.org/events or call 570-226-3164 ext. 4.

Closed-toe shoes are required. Please sign-in at the Camp Office upon arrival. Dress for the weather. This program includes light to moderate outdoor activity on uneven terrain and boardwalks that may be slick.

The Delaware Highlands Conservancy’s mission is to conserve the forests, farmland, clean waters, and wildlife habitat of the Upper Delaware River region for present and future generations and to foster environmental stewardship through community engagement. For more information, call 570-226-3164/845-583-1010 or visit www.DelawareHighlands.org.
