MILANVILLE, PA — After multiple years of hosting only virtual events, the Upper Delaware River Valley came alive with the hustle and bustle of scientists, naturalists and nature enthusiasts for the return of the Upper Delaware BioBlitz in person at the Highlights Foundation Retreat Center this past weekend.
BioBlitz, a two-day biological survey, was a collaborative effort involving scientists and naturalists from various fields, including botany, entomology, ornithology, herpetology and more. Armed with nets, microscopes and notebooks, these experts set out to catalog as many species as possible within the retreat’s diverse habitats, which include forests, meadows, wetlands, and the south
branch of the Calkins Creek. The event yielded an impressive array of findings, with hundreds of species identified.
One of the most remarkable aspects of BioBlitz was its emphasis on community engagement and education. On Saturday, the event was open to the public for families, students, and nature lovers to participate in guided walks, educational workshops and hands-on activities.
Beyond the scientific discoveries, BioBlitz fostered a deep sense of connection to the natural world while attendees learned about the critical role each species plays in maintaining ecological balance. The event also underscored the importance of conservation efforts to protect these habitats for future generations.
The Upper Delaware BioBlitz at the Highlights Retreat was more than just a scientific survey; it was a celebration of nature, a community gathering, and a powerful reminder of the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
