NARROWSBURG – Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) is delighted to announce the new season of Retro Cinema at the historic Tusten Theatre. This monthly cinematic celebration will commence on Thursday May 7th and run through November 5th. In recognition of DVAA’s 50th Anniversary, this year’s Retro Cinema selections were all released in its founding year: 1976.
Nineteen seventy-six was a stellar year for cinema and DVAA is delighted to be showing bona fide classics like Taxi Driver, Carrie and All the President’s Men, alongside lesser remembered films like Sparkle and the hilarious Murder by Death. Seventies camp is in full display in the Barbra Streisand version of A Star Is Born and Sci-Fi classic Logan’s Run.
Thursday, May 7th: All the President’s Men (1976)
Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman, this thriller tells the story of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, as they investigate the Watergate scandal during the 1972 elections, released just four years after the events it portrays.
Thursday, June 11th: A Star Is Born (1976)
Big stars, big songs, big hair. The 1976 version of A Star Is Born has it all, including the memorable credit “Miss Streisand’s clothes from… her closet.” Moving the plot to the music industry (the 1937 and 1954 versions were set in Hollywood), this version features the Oscar-winning song, “Evergreen.”
Thursday, July 2nd: Logan’s Run (1976)
Taking some admirably big swings when predicting what fashion might look like in the future, this Sci-Fi classic explores a world where resources are saved by exterminating everyone over 30 and the efforts of some dissenters who are determined to live longer. *This screening is sponsored by Clobr.*
Thursday, August 13th: Sparkle (1976)
Before there was Dreamgirls, there was Sparkle. This Irene Cara-starring rags-to-riches musical is loosely based on the career of The Supremes. Featuring a fantastic soundtrack written by Curtis Mayfield.
Thursday, September 3rd: Murder by Death (1976)
Written by Neil Simon and with an unbelievable cast, including Maggie Smith, Peter Falk, Alec Guiness, David Niven, Peter Sellers and Truman Capote(!), this Agatha Christie parody is hilarious from beginning to end. *This screening is sponsored by Madame Fortuna.*
Thursday, October 1st: Carrie (1976)
Not everyone enjoys the prom. Directed by Brian De Palma, adapted from Stephen King’s classic novel and with career-defining performances by Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, start your spooky season at the Tusten Theatre with one of the all-time greatest horror movies. *This screening is sponsored by Bar Veloce.*
Thursday, November 5th: Taxi Driver (1976)
Frequently cited as one of the greatest movies ever made (despite failing to win a single Oscar), this gritty tale of one man’s spiral through loneliness into something far darker is a defining depiction of 1970s NYC. * This screening is sponsored by Bar Veloce.*
Whether you're a cinema aficionado or just looking for a fun night out at the movies, the Retro Cinema Series at the Tusten Theatre promises something for everyone. Screenings take place at the Tusten Theatre, 210 Bridge Street in Narrowsburg, NY. Tickets $15 for non-DVAA members, $12 for members, $10 youth tickets (12 & under) are available where appropriate.
