Election switch-up

Posted

As we reported in Tuesday’s issue, many local officials may be back on the ballot this coming November. Due to a change in New York State’s election schedule moving to even-numbered years, this year will bring some changes.

Voting is an institutional right and also an opportunity—something that every citizen should partake in. And it’s something that should be made as simple and seamless as possible.

Also this year, New York will embark on Congressional redistricting. Recently, a judge ordered that the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission redraw the congressional map by February 6.

Although some experts say this won’t result in changes in 2026, and it may be appealed in court, it could potentially bring changes and sway Democrat-led districts.

Governor Kathy Hochul seemed to show her support for the decision, saying, “[This] underscores the importance of these constitutional principles and directs the congressional map be redrawn… so impacted communities are fully represented and have a voice in our democracy.”

On top of those changes to election year cycles, one thing becomes clear: we don’t want voters to be confused.

It’s already difficult to keep up with who is running and when during “off season” elections, for everything from town and school boards to our state and Congressional representatives.

This year we will see a race for Governor as well as State Senate, Congress, and now—local positions.

It’s a lot to keep track of.

That’s why we’re sounding the alarm early, and imploring readers to be aware of primaries that will occur in June, and the General Election in November.

You can find information on the Sullivan County Board of Elections website, and inside these pages as we continue to cover the 2026 political calendar.
