ELLENVILLE–– Game 1: Fallsburg vs Rondout Girls Basketball
Rondout was able to secure a massive win over Fallsburg in the consolation game of the girls’ matches.
The first quarter showed both teams pretty even with the Lady Comets down by just a few points early on. However, the Ganders started pulling away hard in the second quarter with two separate runs of 10 and 15 points respectively. The combination of Rondouts excellent passing and lockdown press were difficult for Fallsburg to overcome.
Rondout was able to hold Fallsburg to just five points, in the final quarter all coming from foul shots by Marilyn Santos, meanwhile the Ganders sunk another 16 with three baskets coming off back to back steals from Rondout’s Liz Hannigan.
The Ganders ended the game with a 64-18 win over Fallsburg. Marilyn Santos and Ella Morse were chosen as their team’s all star picks for the tournament as both were top scorers for their teams.
“Coming into the 2nd quarter it was great, we were one bucket away, but in the second quarter we had 28 turnovers. We had two senior leaders out with injuries so it was tough to get team chemistry going today. This is our second game and we’re still learning but in two weeks we should be in a better rhythm,” Fallsburg Coach Mike Ballard said afterwards.
Game 2: Fallsburg vs Tri-Valley Boys Basketball
Tri-Valley was able to take home a tight win over Fallsburg in their consolation matchup.
Fallsburg went on an early run before Tri-Valley responded with a seven point run of their own. Both defenses were on excellent display forcing many turnovers.Tri-Valley was up by just three at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same with neither team able to get a definitive edge. Going into the half it was a close one point game with Tri-Valley still holding a slight edge.
It was anyone’s game going into the last quarter and the crowds’ energy was unmatched. It was neck and neck for the first six minutes with both teams sinking shots. In the final two minutes Tri-Valley sunk a deep 3-pointer and followed it with a perfect inside pass into a layup on their next possession. The Bears would finish the game with a 53-46 win over the Comets.
Fallsburg coach Vernon Poole had this to say after the loss, “Both teams played very hard, it’s early in the season so we have lots of bumps and bruises to work out. We just fell a little short tonight, but I’m very proud of them of the players.”
Game 3: Ellenville vs Tri-Valley Girls Basketball Championship Game
Tri-Valley drew first blood with an impressive inside pass off an inbound play. Ellenville was able to respond with an eight point run to take the lead over the Lady Bears. Tri-Valley was exhibiting excellent passing but it was difficult for them to finish on their shots. The second quarter saw Ellenville pull definitively ahead and held the Lady Bears to only two points in the quarter.
It was an intense ending with multiple girls fouling out from both teams but in the end Ellenville brought home a 49-40 championship win over Tri-Valley.
