MONTICELLO – Voters going to the polls this October and November will be electing a New York State Supreme Court Judge, Sullivan County Sheriff, Sullivan County Treasurer as well as electing various members of their town and village boards, depending on your location.
There will also be a Statewide Proposition on the ballot requesting permission for the Olympic Sports Complex in Essex County to build new Nordic ski and biathlon trails in the Adirondack forest preserve. This requires Constitutional permission.
The following races will be on the ballot:
Statewide Offices:
Voters in Sullivan County will be voting for a Supreme Court Judge, 3rd Judicial District. The race for one seat is between William T. Little Jr. and Dana Lynn Salazar.
Countywide Offices:
Voters can cast a ballot for incumbent Sheriff Michael Schiff, who has been Sullivan County Sheriff for 26 and is seeking his sixth term in office.
Tim Dymond, who was defeated by Schiff in the Republican Primary for Sheriff, is running as a write-in candidate.
Kathleen Lara is running unopposed for Sullivan County Treasurer, replacing Nancy Buck, who is retiring. Lara has been Deputy County Treasurer for 10 years.
Townwide Races:
Town of Bethel
Supervisor Daniel Sturm is running unopposed for Bethel Supervisor, a post he has held for 18 years.
Town Clerk Rita Sheehan is running unopposed for Bethel Town Clerk. She has served the town for 28 years. Sheehan is the second-long-est elected public servant in the history of the Town of Bethel, behind Merle Williams, who served 31 years as Tax Collector.
The race for Town Council is heavily contested as six Bethel residents are running for two seats. Councilmember Lillian Hendrickson is retiring.
Running for the two seats are incumbent William J. Crumley, Cliff Manning, Paula Moss, Adam L. Gold, Nicole Newick and John Maniec.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Bob Bonnaci is running unopposed.
Incumbent Tax Collector Susan Brown is running unopposed.
Incumbent Town Justice Kevin Rhyne is running unopposed.
Town of Callicoon
There are no contested races in the Town of Callicoon.
Incumbent Supervisor Tom Bose is running unopposed.
Incumbent Councilmen Scott Gaebel and Charles Schadt are running unopposed.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Ryan Bose is running unopposed.
Town of Cochecton
Incumbent Supervisor Gary Maas is running unopposed.
Incumbent Town Clerk Maryann Oumrim is running unopposed.
Three candidates are running for two Town Council seats in the Town of Cochecton. Incumbents Sean Nearing and John Nober are running for re-election and Dr. Paul Salzberg, who was formerly a Town Council member, has also thrown his hat in the ring.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Jeffrey Daub is running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Tax Collector Eileen Hennessy is running unopposed.
Incumbent Town Justices Craig Fine and Steven Sauer also both running unopposed.
Town of Delaware
Incumbent Supervisor Scott DuBois is running unopposed.
Leila McCullough is running unopposed for Town Clerk, replacing 28-year veteran Tess McBeath, who is retiring.
On the Town Council, four Town of Delaware residents are running for two seats.
Incumbents Al Steppich and Ian Blumenthal are on the ballot looking to be re-elected as well as Steven Tollen and Jonathan Duffy.
In the Superintendent of Highways race, Chris Hermann is running unopposed. Hermann will be replacing retiring Highway Superintendent Bill Eschenberg, who served the town for 26 years.
Town of Fallsburg
The Town of Fallsburg is seeing a little bit of a change as the Supervisor and a Council Member look to trade places.
Councilman Nate Steingart is running unopposed for Town Supervisor.
Town Clerk Paula Grogan is running unopposed. Earlier in the year, the Town of Fallsburg Town Board voted to separate the positions of Town Clerk and Receiver of Taxes because of the size of the town.
Supervisor Michael Bensimon is now running for Town Council in a three-way race for two board seats against incumbent Miranda Behan and challenger Amy Barkley-Carey.
The Receiver of Taxes is a write-in race as no candidate officially made the ballot.
Incumbent Town Justice Jamie Kaminski is running unopposed.
Village of Woodridge
The most sought-after position in all of Sullivan County is in the Village of Woodridge, which has six candidates on the ballot and a write-in running for two open Trustee seats.
On the ballot itself, incumbent Leni Binder is running and will be joined by Louis Saperstein, Martin Rosenberger, Josef Rosenfeld, Carl Lomnitz and Celia Avadyaeu. Incumbent trustee Yoranda Sanabria is not on the ballot but is running as a write-in, according to village officials.
Town of Forestburgh
The Town of Forestburgh has three contested races this fall – Supervisor, Town Council and Superintendent of Highways.
In the Supervisor’s Race, incumbent Dan Hogue, Jr. is running against former Supervisor William Sipos.
In the Clerk/Tax Collector race Teresa Collins is running unopposed.
In the Town Council race, three candidates are running for two open board seats. Incumbents Karen Ellsweig and Susan Parks-Landis are running as is challenger Robert Sipos.
In the race for Superintendent of Highways, incumbent Joseph Ruggeri will be squaring off against challenger Todd Petrowsky.
Town of Fremont
In the Town of Fremont, Supervisor Brian Brustman is running unopposed.
Appointed Clerk/Tax Collector Jody Schanil is running for her first term in office, having replaced retiring Town Clerk/Tax Collector Diane McElroy ealier this year.
In the Town Council race, Charles Hahl and incumbent John Hubert are running for two open seats. Louis Milucky is retiring from the board.
In the Superintendent of Highways race, former councilman, supervisor and legislator from the Town of Fremont, George Conklin III, is running for election. He is being challenged by a write-in candidate, Colin Phelps.
Town of Highland
In the Town of Highland Supervisor’s race, incumbent Supervisor John Pizzolato is being challenged by Mary Ellen Carney.
In the Town Clerk’s race, incumbent Town Clerk Susan Hoffman, who has been in office nearly five years, is being challenged by Sonia Kidney, who currently serves on the town council.
In the Town Council race, four candidates are running for two open board seats. The candidates are: Christopher Dickey, Joseph Krist, Frank Monteleone, and Gabor Dezso.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Joe Barnes is running unopposed.
Incumbent Town Justice Kathryn Sweeney is running unopposed.
Town of Liberty
In the Town of Liberty two people are running for two open council seats.
Incumbent Councilman Bruce Davidson is running for re-election and Sherri Kavleski is also running. Town Councilman John Lennon is not seeking re-election.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Matthew Dewitt is running for re-election.
Three candidates are running for two open seats as Town Justice.
Incumbent Troy Johnstone is running for re-election and the other candidates are Brian Shortall and Jerome Dorfman. Town Justice Ron Stabak is not seeking re-election.
Town of Lumberland
In the Town of Lumberland there are no contested races.
Incumbent Supervisor Suzanne Edzenga is running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Clerk/Tax Collector Laurie Terry is running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Councilmen Zoriana Gingold and Ihor Lukiw are both unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Donald Hunt Jr. is running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Town Justice Lorry King is running unopposed for re-election.
Town of Mamakating
In the Town of Mamakating, Councilman from Ward 4, Peter Goodman, is running for Town Supervisor.
In Ward 1, current Supervisor Michael Robbins is running for Council Member.
In Ward 2, incumbent Council Member Gary Forthoffer is running for re-election.
In Ward 3, incumbent Council Member Matthew Mordas is running for re-election against challenger Dino Orfanos.
In Ward 4, Robert Rogers is running for election unopposed.
In Ward 5, incumbent Council Member James Post is running for re-election against challenger Leslie Ocasio.
In Ward 6, incumbent Council Member Tyler Wood is running for re-election.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Thomas Morrow is running unopposed for re-election.
For Justice, incumbents Terrence Mullen and Zachary Kelson are running unopposed.
Town of Neversink
There are no contested races in the Town of Neversink.
Incumbent Supervisor Christopher Matthews is running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent council members Scott Grey and Richard Coombe Jr. are running unopposed for re-election.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Preston Kelly is running unopposed for re-election.
Keith Stryker is running unopposed for Town Justice.
Town of Rockland
Incumbent Supervisor Robert Eggleton is running unopposed for re-election.
There are four candidates for two open seats on the Town Council. Incumbent council members Peter Devantier and Carol Edwards are running for re-election. Also running for the two seats are Francis Hank Wolcott and Robert Hager.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Roger Decker is being challenged by Douglas Meyer.
With long-time Town of Rockland Town Justice Peter Feinberg retiring, there is one open seat. There are three candidates for one Town Justice Seat. They are William Roser Jr., Alexandra Vagnone and Elwin Wood.
Town of Thompson
Incumbent Supervisor William Rieber Jr. is seeking re-election and being challenged by councilman Scott Mace.
Three candidates are running for two seats on the Town Council. Incumbents John Pavese and Melinda Meddaugh are running for re-election and Shawn Wiles is also on the ballot.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Hayden Carnell is being challenged by Charles Brasington.
Town Justice Richard Baum is running unopposed for re-election.
Town of Tusten
Incumbent Supervisor Bernard Johnson is seeking re-election.
Incumbent Clerk/Tax Collector Crystal Weston is seeking re-election.
Incumbent council members Kevin McDonough and Greg Triggs are seeking re-election.
Incumbent Superintendent of Highways Donald Neiger is seeking re-election.
Incumbent Town Justices Klu Padu and David Casey are seeking re-election.
