ROSCOE –– It was a beautiful sunny day in Fallsburg for the Comets’ recent game against Port Jervis. Unfortunately for Fallsburg they ended their season with a 4-2 loss against the Raiders but played with heart and hustle. Coach Cassandra Foertch echoed this after the game saying, “This is the game we should’ve had the first time we played them but they picked it up, we got blown out 6-0 last time we played Port but we came out much better this time.”
The first half started a pretty even back and forth with neither team gaining too much momentum. Port broke the ice with an early goal 9 minutes in but Fallsburg’s Katherine Alvarado Castro responded with an amazing penalty kick to tie the game 1-1.
Their first goal seemed to energize the Comets as they kept up the momentum and started to take possession more. Towards the end of the half multiple Fallsburg players came very close to scoring but the half ended still tied up 1-1.
In the second half the game started to flip in Port’s favor, with the Raiders playing more dominantly and getting many more shot opportunities than Fallsburg. This dominance culminated in a goal for Port 15 minutes into the second half to put them up 2-1 over Fallsburg.
The Comets weren’t finished yet though and quickly fired back 5 minutes later with a goal by Dayana Murillo Madrid to tie the game 2-2. The energy from the teams, coaches and fans was intense at this point and even forced the refs to pause the game to talk with coaches from both teams due to perceived aggression from both teams. The refs decided to continue the game but the break in momentum seemed to affect Fallsburg the most. From that point on it was the beginning of the end for the Comets.
The Raiders scored a third time a few minutes later to make the game 3-2 in their favor. Then in the final few minutes of the game Port sealed the deal with a fourth and final goal from midfield to give them a 2 point lead over Fallsburg. Sadly, there was nothing else Fallsburg could do and the game ended shortly after with Fallsburg losing 4-2.
Coach Foertch had this to say after the game, “I thought we’d do a little better after our win against Liberty but sadly we couldn’t pull it off. We’ve pushed hard to grow the team this year, and I’m really proud of these girls, and I’m excited for the future seasons of Fallsburg soccer.”
Coach Foertch plans to continue coaching next season and hopes to come back even stronger.
