FLEETWOOD, PA – Riding consecutive career low rounds of 81 and 74, senior Gabby Cohen finished second by one shot in the Kutztown Fall Invitational Golf Tournament played Sunday and Monday at Moselem Springs Golf Club and tied a school record. Her 74 equaled the lowest score ever posted by a Kutztown golfer at Moselem, which has hosted both a Fall and Spring Invitational since 2000. It was also the lowest score shot by a Kutztown golfer in any tournament since 2023.
Her second-place finish was the best of her Kutztown career. Unfortunately, Cohen was only entered in the individual competition - her scores did not count in the team competition and Kutztown finished second to Bloomsburg. Had she counted toward the team total, Kutztown would have won by 16 shots instead of coming in second by nine shots.
Cohen was nursing a thumb injury suffered from hitting a tree root in her prior tournament and was questionable to even play. The coaching staff kept her out of the team competition in case she was not able to finish.
Cohen opened the tournament with her then-best collegiate round of 81 on Sunday. She turned in 4-over 39 and was sitting at six-over with four holes to play. But she faltered down the stretch and finished with a round of 11-over on the par 70 course. Still, it was her best score in four years at Kutztown.
Her play in Monday’s second round was near flawless. She hit a career-best 12 greens in regulation, made two birdies and finished with four straight pars to seal her best round ever anywhere -- by five shots. Particularly impressive was Cohen’s fairway wood play on the demanding Moselem course.
Faced with long second shots into seven holes, Cohen hit the green on four of them and was just a few yards short on the others leaving her short chip shots.
The Kutztown fall season concludes with the 36-hole Gannon Invitational in Erie, PA this Sunday and Monday and the 18-hole Gettysburg Invitational on October, 18.
