MONTICELLO - Amidst all the spectacle that a beauty pageant provides, Gloria Romano was crowned Ms. Monticello Raceway 1993 on Sunday afternoon, June 13.

Ms. Romano was chosen over 14 others in a beauty contest held before and during the races on that sunny afternoon. She will represent Monticello Raceway in all advertising and promotional ventures throughout the remainder of the year. It marked the first time in six years that Ms. Monticello Raceway was chosen in a beauty contest. The previous Monticello Raceway representatives were selected by raceway management.

“In the past we always picked a former beauty queen as Miss Monticello Raceway” noted track Public Relations Director John Manzi. “But this year we thought it would be better, and more entertaining, to have Ms. Monticello Raceway chosen in a contest. And you notice we are calling our representative Ms. Monticello Raceway with the emphasis on Ms. After all, this is the 1990s and we want our contest open to pretty girls, whether they are single or married.”

Gloria Romano is 30 years of age and not only the wife of one of the track’s leading drivers, Matt Romano, but also the mother of a beautiful 2-year-old girl. She has had previous pageant experience having been a finalist in the Mrs. New York State pageant a few years ago.

Rick Belyea, a local radio personality, served as the emcee. The 15 contestants paraded first in bathing suits and then came back later in evening gowns.

Adding to the spectacle were two Penthouse Pets, Amy Lynn and Natalie Smith, who served as judges. They were joined by Monticello Village Justice John Diuguid; Newburgh City Councilman John Giudice; and Standardbred Owners Association of New York Vice President Pete Venaglia. The five judges gave points for swimsuit, evening gown and overall appearance.

Selected as first runner-up was Kimberleyfrance Guarino of Middletown. Meghan Gaffney, from Marlboro was second runner-up. The winner, Ms. Romano, is a Monticello resident.

Besides a crown, a sash, a bouquet of roses and a huge trophy, Ms. Romano also received a $500 gift certificate from Helen Morrell Fashions; a $100 gift certificate from New York New York Hair Salon; dinner for two at Carpenito’s Restaurant; and dinner for two at the Raceway’s Club Escoffier.

Over 2,000 fans turned out for the beauty pageant and the races that day.
